The first attempt to ban Arabic in the Eritrean Parliament 1956

The first attempt to ban Arabic in the Eritrean Parliament 1956

When Asfha Woldemichael became the Chief Executive in Eritrea on 15 September 1955 his job was to dismantle the Eritrean Federation Act from day one. Zewdie Retta recalls on his book on Eritrea, written in Amharic that Asfaha wanted to begin by banning Arabic as an official language and to replace it with Amharic. He formed a Committee chaired by Tesfayohannes Berhe and the Committee recommended to the Eritrean Parliament that Tigrinya and Amharic be the official languages in Eritrea. They considered Idris Mohamed Adem, who was the Chair of the Parliament, a nomad who would follow their recommendation and so informed him about their intention in advance. Idris Mohamed Adem on his part alerted all branches of the Muslim League and to their disappointment was the first one to oppose the motion in the Parliament thus the motion was withdrawn.

And on a Christmas Eve day, 24 December, 1958, the Eritrean flag was lowered

In 1956, The Federal Government banned the legal Eritrean languages (Arabic and Tigrinya) and Amharic was made the official language. Ethiopia soon banned the Eritrean  official Seals and the Coat of Arms and in 1958 lowered the Eritrean flag. There were large student and workers demonstration in Asmara and other towns opposing the move. In September 1959, Eritrean Laws were replaced by the 'Ethiopian Penal Code' and in May 1960, the name Eritrean Government was changed to 'Eritrean Administration' and the name Chief Executive to 'Chief Administrator'
